Seven Magic Mountains

Seven Magic Mountains is a sculpture installation by artist Ugo Rondinone. These vibrantly colored boulder towers are around 30 feet high and on exhibit 10 miles outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. I visited these neon monuments after the 2017 gem and jewelry fairs in Vegas. The stark contrast between the bleached desert of Nevada and these psychedelic pillars was fanciful and surreal, particularly since they are placed in the open on a remote parcel of land. The 7 Magic Mountains feel like a blend between the art of Peter Max and Stonehenge, while the scale and chalky neon colors are reminiscent of Jeff Koons' eponymous supersized sculpture of play-doh titled Play-Doh. I drew on top of the series of photos I took on my visit to highlight the Seven Magic Mountains' elegant and alien presence in the mohave.
